HGTV selects Eastern Surfaces for new show

HGTV selected Eastern Surfaces Inc. of Allentown to fabricate and install the kitchen countertops for the network’s new show, “Catastrophe Inc.” The show helps owners who have experienced home damage from disasters.

The family in this episode had water damage throughout its home from three floods in the Allentown area. The TV crew renovated the basement and kitchen and installed a generator to prevent further storm damage. Eastern Surfaces fabricated and installed the kitchen countertops for the episode, which recently aired.

Chuck Martin, co-owner of Eastern Surfaces, said it took the company a day to turn around the kitchen.

This family had been expecting the arrival of its first child.

“They weren’t very lucky; we felt sorry for them,” Martin said this morning.

“It’s a whole new experience when you are working for a TV show,” Martin said. “We have done other episodes. I always get a kick out of it. It’s fun to do. Also, we felt like we helped someone out.”

Artisan Group, an association of countertop fabricators in Austin, Texas, donated the Saratoga Soapstone countertops, and Eastern Surfaces donated the fabrication and installation services, said Gina Covell, public relations director for Artisan Group. She estimated the construction costs for the countertops to be about $5,000 to $6,000. The entire basement renovation cost about $30,000, she said.

“They were expecting their first baby. They lost power so many times. They had water sitting in the kitchen and basement. … Nobody should be hit that many times,” Covell said
